Return to Sender

Return to sender, address, unknown - A devotion

For some of us who read this title, I’m sure we hear the familiar voice of Elvis Presley singing this lyric from one of his most famous songs.

This is how the envelope was addressed when the person you were mailing it to was no longer there. A simple note is written on an envelope. Return to sender, was dropped in a mailbox.

It was sent back to the person who sent it, saying we don’t know where the person is, but they’re no longer at this address. The mail you sent cannot be delivered to them; they are not here any longer.

Today, the Internet, social media, and online searches make it much easier to find people than it’s ever been before, no matter if they change their address, get a new phone number, or move out of town. We’re more connected than we’ve ever been before, as they say.

I thank God; the Lord knows my name, where I live, and how to connect with me. Know one, the Lord reaches out to, does it go back, and returns to the sender. The scriptures are full of reminders that God is calling us; we can’t hide from the Lord; God always knows where we are; and in that promise and truth, we should find peace and hope.

“Jeremiah 1:5: Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
“Psalm 139:8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.”

Let’s be honest; sometimes we don’t want to be found. We don’t want that package or mail to show up with the late bill, the subpoena, or bad news.
Maybe sometimes we try to change our address on purpose to hide or lay low.

It’s the same way in our spiritual walk. There are times when we just want to hide.

But even in those moments, the Lord can find us and call us.

“Genesis 3:9–10 The Lord God called to Adam, “Why are you hiding? 10 And Adam replied, “I heard you coming and didn’t want you to see me naked. So I hid.”

“Hebrews 4:13 No one can hide from God. His eyes see everything we do. We must give an answer to God for what we have done.
The truth is, we can’t hide from God. We can’t change our address, and God is sending us a message every day—a message of love and hope of forgiveness and grace to restore us—even though, when I was away from God, he was calling.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The Lord never told us to stay in our sins, but he died for us so our sins so we could be forgiven. Wherever you’re at today, the Lord loves you and wants to be with you. Did you receive the love letter that he is sending? Check your heart.

The Lord knows your address and is calling you because God loves you.

May the Lord be glorified.
